Kodanad
Kodanad beautifully nestled on the southern bank of Periyar River is another major tourist destination during your Kerala Tour. It is a small riverside hamlet in Ernakulam district of Kerala. It is located at distance of about approximately 42 kilometers away from east of Kochi and remains to be the largest elephant training and rescue center of the paradise of the south. The main attraction of the village is the elephant training centre and if time permits make sure you do watch the how the elephants are trained. In early days the village used to be the largest elephant capturing centre of South India. Later in the year 1977 the process of capturing elephant was illegalized and finally came to an end.

  2. Kodanad was a beautiful tourist destination for foreign tourists and a great picnic spot for the locals. I have been to this place numerous times during my childhood since it was very close to my home. Unfortunately, the animals were kept in a poor condition and lot of complaints were registered for animals abuse. All the animals from this place were either released or moved to an open zoo at Abhayaranyam. See the current status of Kodanad Elephant training centre

Abhayaranyam is an interesting place to visit, which is about 2.5km from Kodanad. Many of the animals from Kodanad are moved there. Also, it is a good picnic area, which already started getting lot of attraction among the locals.
